Our graphic design system submission to the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg for the 2015 African Futures Festival. Our brief was that we imagine an optimistic future for Africa, with reference to some key African cultural producers such as Spoek Mathambo, Ikire Jones and Wangechi Mutu.
Historically in order to connect to others, meant having to travel and so technology reflected the need to create physical movement. Although technological advances are still concerned with global connectivity the focus has shifted to communications and media. We imagined what the face of new media in Africa could look like through the lense of a confident African culture of the near future. We took a simple icon of new media—the play button—and gave it a bright, geometric style with aesthetic links to the continent.
